Tardy Policy

Getting to Class On Time at SMS

Students are responsible for getting to classes on time. On time means in the classroom when the bell rings at the start of class.  Being to class on time is a skill we work to develop with our students and holding them accountable to those behaviors helps build that skill.

What is considered TARDY?

  • The first bell rings at 7:25 am and students are released from the gym, cafeteria, or library.
  • Students are considered tardy if they are not in class at 7:30 am.

What happens when a student is tardy?

Teacher-based Actions

  • Teachers will mark the student TARDY in Infinite Campus for attendance.
  • Teacher will reflect tardiness in Work Habits grade
  • Teacher will speak with the student and their family about tardies, emphasizing the importance of being to class on time. Teacher will document conversation in Infinite Campus.

School-based Actions

  • Tardy report from Infinite Campus run weekly for administrators.
  • A set number of tardies will be identified each week.
    • Students reaching that number or beyond will have an administrator assigned lunch detention in the main office for a week
  • Continued tardiness will result in a problem-solving meeting with the student and family to develop a plan so that the student can be successful, as well as school-based consequences.
  • Repeated or frequent weeks on the tardy list can result in:
    • In School Suspension
    • Saturday School
    • Continued lunch detention in the main office for a week.
    • Loss of privilege
    • Alternate passing
    • Escorted passing
    • Loss of participation in activity (assembly, team building, dance, etc.)
